Games similar to League of Legends (LoL)

League of Legends is currently the most popular online game in the world with over 60 million active monthly players. But playing the same game every day can sometimes be boring. There are hundreds of MOBA games that are similar to LoL but we’re not going to waste your time listing them all. Instead we’ve picked the most popular challengers to LoL and compiled them into an easy list.

Dota 2

If you’ve never heard of Dota 2 then shame on you! Dota 2 is currently the 4th most played PC game in the world (with League of Legends being number 1). The game was created by Valve the company behind successful titles such as Half Life 2, Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2.

Released in 2013 Dota 2 has grown to become the most popular game currently available on Steam. The game uses Valves source 2 engine to produce incredible graphics and a dynamic battle arena to fight your opponents.

There are a few major differences compared to League of Legends though. Recalling in game is not an option, if you don’t have a teleport scroll then you will need to run back to base. Of course running back to base is very uncommon as you can get a courier that delivers items to you on the battlefield. This way you can stay in lane longer and focus more on fighting instead of going back to the shop and running around.

There are also secret shops located around the map so you can even buy items when roaming around. While roaming you will also discover there are power crystals that give you special powers. Almost like the red and blue buffs in League of Legends but you don’t need kill anything.

Dota 2 is also a big part of eSports and has various international competitive teams. The largest tournament is called the International which is hosted by Valve and takes place annually. This is similar to the World Championship series for League of Legends. If you’re looking for a highly competitive game similar to LoL then this is the one for you.

Smite is another popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that has become popular for its uniqueness. The main thing that separates Smite from other MOBA games is the fact that you play in 3rd person instead of a bird’s eye view. This gives the game a whole new dimension when fighting other players. Of course the change goes against the traditional MOBA layout and not everyone will enjoy it. Sometimes things are better left unchanged.

The game was released in 2014 by Hi-Rez studios who are responsible for other titles such as Global Agenda and Tribes: Ascend. The game has been reviewed by many major video game critics and currently holds a score of 83 / 100. Which is very good considering League of Legends received a slightly lower number of 78.

The popularity of the game has grown considerably since its release and in 2015 Hi-Rez studios hosted the first Smite World Championships. The event was hosted in Atlanta, Georgia and featured teams from North and South America, Europe and China. The prize pool for the tournament was $2.6 million USD which at the time made it the third highest in eSports. This put it ahead of the League of Legends World Championships prize pool. If you’re looking for something a bit different compared to other MOBA games then this is the one for you.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos

The game allowed players to make their own mods and custom game modes. A group of player’s game together to make a new game mod called ‘Defense of the Ancients’ based on a map from the StarCraft series.

This mod was the birth of the MOBA genre and quickly became the most popular and most discussed free game mod in the world. Since then as previously mentioned there has been a new standalone release called Dota 2. The new Dota 2 features the same map and heroes from the original mod but new game modes and updated graphics.

Released by Blizzard Entertainment in 2015 Heroes of the Storm features playable champions from all of Blizzard’s franchises. These include Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, The Lost Vikings and Overwatch.

Although technically the game is classed as a multiplayer online battle arenas the play style is definitely different compared to other games in the same genre. This has even led Blizzard themselves to referring the game as an ‘online hero brawlers’ and specifically not calling the game a MOBA or real time strategy (RTS) game. The game play style is a lot let serious compared to other games and is more about having fun than learning the in depth mechanics of the game.

If you’ve ever played any of Blizzard’s other games then seeing all the characters in one game is great fun, it’s almost like them all meeting up in an alternate universe. The game has received favourable reviews since its release and has a score of 86 on metacritic which beats both League of Legends and Smite.

Heroes of the Storm also recently held its first eSport event in 2015. The event was called the 2015 Heroes of the Storm World Championship and took place in California through the end of October to the start of November. The prize pool was a cool $1.2 million USD with the first place winners Cloud9 earning $200k.
